Since the debut of his music hit the scene back in 2010, it was inevitable to see that the young Australian multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/producer was sure to make big waves in the music world. The release of teaser track/single “Back To The Shore” in August 2010 got many music bloggers and industry noticing the efforts of new kid on scene, Darren Hart.
2011 saw Harts’ dance oriented alternative rock style gain more interest from the likes of many industry personnel and record labels in Australia, eventually leading to him signing a global record deal with Island Records / Universal Music Australia. Harts put together a band and played live around Australia throughout 2012 and 2013, performing small clubs and bars, often playing to empty rooms. His first release came in the form of a 5-track EP titled “Offtime” released on March 1, 2013. The EP included and spawned 4 singles, ‘Back To The Shore’, ‘All Too Real’ (2012), ‘The Music’ (2013) and ‘Offtime’ (2013) which all gained online attention from music bloggers and publications as well as a few radio spins on Triple J in Australia, BBC 6 Music in the UK and multiple collage radio stations in the US. Harts toured the EP in March 2013 playing a string of Australian east coast shows.
After parting with Island Records / Universal Music Australia in August 2013, Harts released his first independent single on November 11, 2013. The single, titled “Leavn It All Behind”, marked a clear shift in momentum for Harts and fast became his most successful release to date. ‘Leavn It All Behind’, landed radio play throughout the UK and Europe, including BBC6 Radio, Amazing Radio, Radio 3 Spain, France Inter Radio as well as numerous online blog/publication features and a TV sync on French Late Night TV program “Le Grand Journal”. It also went allowed him to catch the attention of his idols and musical legends such as Prince & Quincy Jones.
Paul Lester, of The Guardian UK featured Harts as “New Band Of The Day” on December 20, 2013, in an article which referred to Hart as a “Super-talented Aussie pop funkateer who does everything – write, perform, produce, arrange – in his PJs” Also going on to say “…Harts should be No 1 everywhere, including other planets”.
Following the success of ‘Leavn It All Behind’, Harts released what he announced was the second single from his upcoming debut album. “Lovers In Bloom” was released globally through his own label, ‘Offtime Music’ on March 7, 2014. ‘Lovers In Bloom’ gained new widespread audiences for Harts through social media and word of mouth. It also enjoyed a few radio spins on BBC 6 Radio, Triple J, France Inter Radio, Amazing Radio and managed to reach number 30 most talked about tracks on HypeMachine. Harts collected more global recognition as the song and video was tweeted out by Questlove of The Roots and later Prince’s 3RDEYEGIRL twitter account.
In early 2014, Harts was contacted by one of his biggest musical idols, Prince. Prince had heard his music and seen his live videos on YouTube and invited Harts to come to his legendary Paisley Park studios in Minneapolis to meet, spend time and jam with him.
“Being invited to meet, jam and just hang out with Prince was amazing. He unloaded a lot of his knowledge on me that I’m truly grateful for. Everything from making records to playing live. Getting the opportunity to play with him and his musicians was an unbelievable experience and it was amazing to have the chance to play my own music with them. Prince is a music legend, international icon and a genius. He is also the coolest dude I’ve ever met.”
“Daydreamer” (which Harts wrote, performed, recorded and produced himself) is 10 tracks lyrically and conceptually dealing with themes of escapism, paranoia and uncertainty. It features everything we’ve come to expect from the young funkateer in funky rhythms, catchy falsetto melodies and that signature Harts guitar work. It also showcases experimentation in new areas for his sound, including elements of Hip-Hop, Blues, and also introduces a softer/mellow side.
Latest single, “Red & Blue” has been added to Triple J Rotation, and is a track driven almost entirely by Harts’ guitar, and is a unique combination of Indie Rock meets Electronic. The Hendrix influence in Harts’ guitar playing is much of what powers the entire song, coupled with the soulful vocal that is glued with the guitar together as one. The song was hand picked by Prince as his favourite off the upcoming album.
This is only the beginning… Harts invites you to join him for the ride!
